How to diagnose and fix an air conditioning system that is not working.

Since the failure of an air conditioner to turn on, loss of air conditioner cooling capacity, reduced air conditioning output temperatures, loss of cool air supply, or even loss of air flow entirely can be due to a variety of problems with one or more components of an air conditioner or air conditioning system be sure to review the diagnostic procedures at each of the individual air conditioning diagnosis and repair major topics listed just below.

If your air conditioning system has lost its cooling capacity or won't start

  • A/C REFRIGERANT LEAK DETECTIONTheir are a few ways to test and find a leak. Pressure system with nitrogen. Looks for visable oil residue. Use a freeon leak detector. Put red dye into system.
  • AIR HANDLER UNIT: problems with the air handler, air filters, and the cooling coil itself. Check filter. Check power supply. Check for ice.
  • COMPRESSOR CONDENSER: problems with air conditioner compressor/condenser units. Check power supply. Check heat coming out of condenser. Check for ice.
  • CONTROLS & SWITCHESThis is a tough one. First check to make shure thermastat has power. If it does, then turn to desired setting and check to see if any of componets are coming on. Check for water in drain pan.
  • LOST COOLING CAPACITY: what to do when not enough cool air comes out of the system. First check the copper lines coming into condenser to see if one is cold a sweating. If it is cool to touch but not sweating this would indicate a freeon pressure problem in most cases.
