New Carrier Green Speed Heat Pump System

INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 16, 2011 – Carrier Corp., a unit of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE: UTX), unveiled the HVAC industry’s highest efficiency residential, air source heat pump at the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) Conference & Indoor Air Expo in San Antonio, Texas. The new heat pump delivers an HSPF heating

efficiency rating up to 13, the highest of any air source heat pump on the market, and cooling efficiencies of up to 20 SEER. The innovation behind this advanced heat pump is known as Carrier® Greenspeed™ intelligence and will be available as part of the Infinity® heat pump line, ranging 2 to 5 tons. Carrier Corp., the world’s leader in high technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, improves the world around us through engineered innovation and environmental stewardship.

“Carrier is committed to developing residential heating and cooling products that take innovation to a higher degree,” said Chris Nelson, vice president sales and marketing, Carrier Residential and Commercial Systems. “We are proud our new Infinity heat pump with Greenspeed intelligence will be the highest heating efficiency air source heat pump available. In the 3-ton size, it has 29 to 69 percent higher heating efficiency than any competitive product within the residential, air source heat pump category.”

Carrier GreenSpeed Heat Pump

Carrier GreenSpeed will give homeowners the comfort of consistent indoor temperatures associated with variable speed technology while reducing their use of fossil fuels and lowering their electric heating costs. The new line of heat pumps is designed to operate fluidly between 40 and 100 percent capacity while heating or cooling a home. This innovation was made possible by pairing the superior communication ability of Carrier Greenspeed intelligence with a Copeland Scroll® variable speed compressor from Emerson Climate Technologies, optimized specifically for this heat pump. The unprecedented capacity control can match the load in a home during a wide range of conditions. This flexibility allows for improved temperature control and dehumidification as well as enhanced Infinity zoning, regardless of climate. The Carrier GreenSpeed is also capable of maintaining consistent, higher leaving air temperatures even when outdoor temperatures fall into the teens, improving owner comfort. Standard heat pumps tend to have cooler leaving air that cools further as outdoor temperatures decline.

At a 3 ton size and in an outdoor temperature of 17 degrees Fahrenheit, the Infinity heat pump with Carrier Greenspeed intelligence can achieve 17 to 86 percent greater heating capacity than standard heat pump products on the market today. This breakthrough product will significantly extend the geographic range for heat pumps to serve as a home’s primary heat source.
“The Infinity heat pump with Carrier Greenspeed intelligence is an HVAC innovation in a class of its own,” said Nelson. “It’s just the latest example of how Carrier continues to introduce cutting-edge residential heating and cooling solutions.”

The new line of variable speed heat pumps has distinctive features that will benefit both Carrier dealers and their customers. Dealers will appreciate the ease in installation created by the two-wire control connection to the outdoor unit and Infinity Control diagnostic capabilities. Consumers will welcome the variable speed motor’s lower energy usage and more consistent indoor temperature control all year long.

The heat pump also employs an upgraded Infinity control software package that constantly monitors a wider range of critical system parameters, including suction pressure and compressor temperature. This intelligence helps ensure performance efficiency, optimized comfort and reliable operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“The Infinity heat pump with Carrier Greenspeed intelligence is a revolutionary breakthrough for home comfort and advances Carrier’s natural leadership in environmental technologies,” said John Mandyck, Carrier vice president, Sustainability & Environmental Strategies. “Carrier Greenspeed intelligence also demonstrates how technological innovation can reduce energy use and carbon emissions, continuing Carrier’s long-standing commitment to providing sustainable solutions.”

The new line of heat pumps is currently in the final stage of field testing, with consumer availability scheduled for this summer.

Air Conditioning Austin, and the importance to have an efficient attic!!

Most people when they consider cutting their cooling and heating cost they only think about replacing their air conditioning and heating system. While this is true and very important. In a lot of cases the customer does not see the change in their bill as much as they like. Well if you have ventured into your attic during the summer you will know it is boiling up their. So the one thing that is never talked about is making your attic efficient. Over 40 percent of air loss is through your ceiling into your attic. And on top of this that 150+ temps are just sitting right their on top of you ceiling. So how do you make your attic more efficient and how do I stop the air loss. Here are a few tips below:

1. Re insulate your attic. Most attic spaces have an R value of R30 or so. Austin Energy is now recommending for our area a home have at least R60. This will do two things. Stop the air loss and put a gap between that hot attic air and your ceiling.

2. Add Radiant barrier. This will help insulate the attic from the outside air.

3. Add solar attic fans. This will pull the heat out of the attic.

4. Have leaking ducts repaired or replaced

After doing these couple of simple steps your air conditioning and heating system will not loose as much of its air condition air through the attic. It will also make it easier to cool your house down because your attic is not as hot as it was. Probably 30+ degrees cooler than before. So as a consumer you will see two things happen once all of this is done.

1. Decrease in cooling and heating bills.

2. On these 108 degree days you will be able to get your inside temp a few degrees cooler than before. So if you could not get it below 76 you will now be able to get that the thing dowwn to 72 no problem and do it for less money. Best way to look at is. You are paying for that air conditioned and heated air. Why waste it.

Don’t get caught in the Heat: 5 signs you may need an air conditioning repair.

When the summer weather rolls in, there’s nothing worse than finding yourself without air conditioning. Monitoring your air condition system for signs of trouble can help you determine when it’s time for necessary repairs and avoid costly repairs for a damaged unit. Here are five great tips to help you know when your air conditioner may be in need of service call:

Metallic Sound in Ducts: Listen for pinging, popping, or other metallic noises coming from the ductwork, all of which could indicate vents warped from thermal expansion. The noise may also be coming from air running over a loose piece of metal within the duct.
Water Pooling: Air conditioners are outfitted with plastic drain tubes to carry condensation. If something is wrong with the pipe or the pipe is backed up, you may notice this condensation pooling beneath or to the side of your air conditioning unit.
Noisy Air Handler: If you have an older unit, your system may be using a belt-driven motor. A squealing noise could indicate that the belt inside the unit has come loose. If you have a newer unit using a direct-drive motor, then shut off the unit. The motor’s bearing may be shot.
Temperature Swings/Drops: If the temperature of your air conditioning unit begins to shift more than 3 degrees too high or low, it may mean that the unit isn’t cycling properly. If the temperature in the room continues to drop below the set temperature, then the problem may lie with the unit’s thermometer.
Air Conditioner Won’t Turn On: While it may seem obvious, air conditioning units are often the first to go when a circuit board is being overtaxed on a hot day. Double-checking your air conditioner and other potential sources of the problem will allow you to be certain the problem is with the unit itself.

Summer is here with a vengance!!

Sorry I have been unable to blog for a few weeks. But we have been extremely busy. Due to the extreme record hot weather here is the Austin metro area. Air conditioning has never been needed as much as it is now. We added two more service techs and one more installation crew to our air conditioning service staff. That brings our service fleet to 16 air conditioning service trucks. We are growing and at times are having some growing pains trying to get to all the serivce calls. With have increased our staff on weekends to handle the weekend volume. Brian Cardwell, Brent Ford and Larry Vela have been doing a great job of managing the office, service calls and installations. It is going to be a grind here for the next few months as record temps are expected to continue. Thanks to all our customers for their continued support.

Air Conditioning Price Increase

I just got a letter from Trane and Carrier that all materials involved in air conditioning service and systems will be going up on their end. Our porfit margin will stay the same but since their price will be going up it will affect our prices not only on air conditioning equipment but service parts as well. The reason for the increase is the significant increase in the raw materials. Steel, copper and aluminum have risen significantly. Driven in demand in China, India and other devolping countries as well as the steady economic recoveries of develped countries.
Prices for plastics have increased dramatically diven by higher petroleum costs.
Freon prices have increase over 40% since last year.

Phones?

I am sure some of our customers have called in and experienced the phones not working. We hired a business phone company last month. They ran our phones through the internet and have done so with limited success. Thus costing us numerous customers. Well we have had enough and today they are taking the phones out and installing our old ones back through the good o analog lines. So this should be a non issue moving forward.
