The winter months are especially notorious for creating problems with your plumbing. In fact, many of the worst problems can and do happen during winter for various reasons. Below, our Austin plumbers share some of the most common reasons plumbing mishaps occur during the colder months.

Protecting Your Plumbing During the Winter

We believe that homeowners can benefit immensely from knowing the ins and outs of their plumbing system. Knowledge does, in fact, equal power, and educating our customers helps them not only to understand how their plumbing system works, but be able to identify potential issues before they become major ones. Precautionary steps to avoid freezing pipes, for example, keeps your plumbing safe and gives you more time to enjoy yourself, especially as the holidays get closer!

These are some of our suggestions:

  • Allow the heater to run, even if you have stepped out of the house. Set it to the lowest possible temperature that is most comfortable, somewhere in the neighborhood of 68 to 72 degrees.
  • Make sure that the home is insulated, as well as your pipes. Hot air can more easily escape out of openings, such as the creases in windows and doorways.
  • If you know you have pipes in certain areas that are prone to freezing, try to allow warm air circulate through these areas.
  • Try wrapping heat tape around the pipes.
  • Consider leaving the water trickling in pipes that are more prone to freezing. The constant flow of water can help prevent freezing over. You can also turn on the faucets completely every few hours or so to check the flow of the water. If you notice the flow slowing down, this could mean the pipe has begun freezing.
  • If you are leaving the house for vacation or for an extended period of time, turn off the water shut-off valve for the entire home.

As we have only mentioned a few suggestions, we know that there might be more recommendations that might apply to your particular home and your situation. If that is the case, we do advise you to speak with our Austin plumbing team at Texas AC & Plumbing Specialist. We can diagnose any issues and work out a maintenance plan to keep your pipes and your plumbing system continuing to work efficiently, no matter what time of year it is.
